I've been hunting with my White's Classic III SL for about 6 months now and have found over 500 coins in the Monrovia/Arcadia area, mostly at parks and school grounds. I've only found 1 silver coin so far - a 1935 Mercury dime, but I did find a really nice 1906 Indian Head penny and 8 Wheaties.
Any clubs around here? Anyone else been hunting the area?
PS: I've found several rings so far including two gold ones - Those were really exciting to find!

Hi Michael, Have you hunted Vincent Hugo Park in Alhambra? It's been a while since I hunted there, but I did find some nice silver coins. I am in Northern CA now, but if you get a chance try that park and let us know what you think. HH and Good Luck, John

Mainly I've been going to Eisenhower Park in Arcadia along with a few others and some schools, but I'll be sure to check out Vincent Hugo park in the near future. Thanks for the heads up!

Hey Michael,
I actually live in Arcadia, and my son and I go out often to local schools and parks. Lately we've been going to Santa Anita Park across from the racetrack. Although many of the older targets have probably been cleaned out over the years, we've managed a few Rosies, Wheaties, my first Merc, and a couple gold rings.
Let's try to meet up sometime. My son and I have been hoping to run into some other local detectorists, and I'm game to try some new sites in the San Gabriel Valley area.
HH,
Dan

Hi Michael- Welcome ;D ;D ;D, and yeah there's a few local Southern California clubs around. There's a club outa Downey that's full of detectorists! If you're interested if gold prospecting in the local mountains (Azusa /East Fork), I'm a board member of a new local chapter. Although I do more parks, schools and beach hunting . I'm live in the San Gabriel Valley myself! Hope to see you around! ;D HH Max

John Ca Realtor, I spent 3.5 hrs at Victor Lugo Park this afternoon, FYI it's in San Gabrial next to Alhambra, but my results were disappointing. I found 61 coins, 1 arcade token, and a kids ring - but no silver or wheaties, $1.56 total - all clad. Thanks for the suggestion anyway. Gerber, I work for myself so I'm free to go hunting anytime I want. ;D Let's get together and hit Santa Anita Park. I haven't gone there yet but I'd like to check it out. I've never hunted with partners so this should be fun! You can reach me at mfoussecr@yahoo.com BigMax, Gold prospecting? Do these detectors really work well for that? Sounds cool...I'm open to it, let me know when you want to go. Michael in Arcadia

Michael, You bet these thing work for raw gold! But don't get discouraged. This past weekend's weather was tuff! Kinda cold and stormy lookin'. That kinda puts a damper in the parks treasure refilling activities! When the weather gets warm. People play and barbeque and stuff. That's when you gotta go! I only gotta a detector designed for mainly gold prospecting (GB2), but it does a fine job in the parks, beaches and schools. I'll give you a ring on our next outing. If you wanna try local gold prospecting, wait after a heavy rainfall (4" plus). You'll see about 50 to 100 prospectors in the local mountains! HH Max

Sorry to here that about Vincent Lugo Park, It's been five or six years since I hunted there. I guess over the years it been hunted out of the good stuff. I still have the first silver I had found in that park, not a great find, but still silver, a 1962 quarter.

Michael, I may have to come on up and check the area out. There is a lot of history up there. I think you are in a good area for this hobby. Aaron

Hey Michael, Yes, I'll email you soon and maybe we can meet up at one of the local parks. I may have some time this weekend, and possibly even Friday (no school for my son that day, so I may have to take a vacation day ) Sorry to hear about Lugo Park--I'd been wanting to drop by there, but the pickins seem slim. I actually grew up in San Gabriel and used to go to that park in the early '60s when I was a little tyke. I'd love to find a couple oldies that I may have dropped forty years ago!! Here's my email for you and any other locals that would like to get together for a hunt: gerbercat(at)yahoo(dot)com. Lawdogso--you're right, lots of great history around here. People have been flocking to the foothills and the San Gabriel Valley since the mid 1800s. Now if I could just find some of that great old stuff!! Max--I'd love to join one of your prospecting outings, too. Feel free to send me an email when you're planning to go. I'd love to try out my MXT's prospecting mode. HH, Dan

Keep your eyes on the schools. Last summer at Holly Avenue Elem. They took away 6-8" of sand to replace with woodchips. I found my first merc dime in excellent shape and early wheat (1913) penney, both 4-6" deep in the new exposed layer.

Hi Michael! For some reason I remember reading or hearing somewhere that Monrovia parks were off limits to metal detecting. Have you detected in any of the Monrovia parks? My parents live in Glendora so I drive right past you when I go visit them. Next time you're going to hit one of the local parks let me know and I'll see if I can swing by. I'd like to hit a couple of those parks in Monrovia if it's possible.

I see that you live in La Puente. I grew up in La Puente. I use to live right of Temple Ave. by Sparks Elementry. Have you detected the park next to La Puente High School?

Hey Randy- Man this is scary! I can hit a baseball to Sparks Elementary from where I live! Arm ain't what it use to be!? La Puente park removed all the sand & replaced it with the rubber pads (No Chips! ). Got only a Fisher GB2 now. But later my next acquisition is to get a detector with good target ID (visual & tone type). That way my digs will be more effective. A better good target ratio! Possibly a DFX, MXT or Explorer 2. Haven't heard too much about the CZ 3-D unit yet. But eventually I will be hunting that park. Heard La Puente was born back in 1840's. Missed a golden opportunity at the HS. Tore down part of the front entrance area and rebuild! Couldn't jump the fence!
