I recently heard that NEW REGULATIONS have been developed regarding the carrying of metal detectors on airlines. Does anybody know of new regs.? Going to Panama next Wed. for a week and was thinking of taking a detector along. I've got some info. on Panama's laws but not new airline regs. Never had a problem before but who knows the way things are going at the airports.

I have traveled 2-3 times with my detector as a carry-on. I usually just tell the people at the security check points that i have a hobby-type metal detector. then they know what they are looking at and do not freak on you.
Just make sure your digger is in checked baggage. IF you have a hard case, you can check the bag in and have no issues.
Have Fun

Glenn, do as Ron said, and also take a catalog or brochure for the model detector you have to show them that indeed that's what it's for. Make sure the batteries are out of it as well, and they might ask you to turn it on and demonstrate it as well...
If you still have the receipt for it, you should take that or a photocopy as well.

Thanks Ron and Jeff...good ideas. I have taken the MD on airlines before without any problem, both as carry on and in suitcases, international and domestic. What I had just heard of was some VERY NEW security inspired regulation. Seems kind of silly as these things must travel all the time.

I once took my Teknetics aboard an airline in my carry-on bag complete with its 14 AA batteries intact.. Passing thru security xray, the lady stared at it for a long time and finally said "what's that"? I said that was a metal detector and she simply said "ok". HH, Tom ;D
