Any tips on how I might be able to get in some hunting while I'm there? I'd really like the chance to find me some hammered silver.
I'll take some time off I can get a hunt in.

Hi Dave,
Go into the www and search for the metal detecting group in England called the weekenders. When you find their website go into their guest book and sign in. They have a person that does repond back to you very quickly...within a day or two, and they always seem to invite folks from America to come along and search with them. In their webpage they have a great photo album of finds found by their members.
I believe most of their folks are from the London and Oxford area.
I hope that helps you and good luck over in England.

OT, I'm not having much luck with that search. Any chance it's a different name?

I heard a bad thing today. Someone told me that some of the tour operators were actually "salting" the fields before they bring their group in... Anyone hear anything about this?

Hi Tonka,
Many years ago and unbeknownst to Jimmy of Discovery Tours International his England partner did salt some of the fields, but many of us with experience knew what silver coins looked liked coming from the ground and some of our finds back then were questionable. When Jimmy got word of it he fired that person and found someone knew and moved the operation from the Dover area of England to the northeast in the shire of Norfolk. The finds were more plentiful and the quality of the finds became better too. I saw numerous Celtic Gold coins and a very rare Edward the 1st Groat found up north. The Groat had a value of about $10,000, something that Jimmy couldn't afford to salt the field with, and besides you can tell by the look of the coins...patina, toning, coin incrusted with old dirt to be a natural coin drop from 100's or 1000's of years ago.
I can only tell you what I've experienced with my trips to England with Discovery Tours and I don't know to much about the others. If you and Duckhunter plan to go to England and want an all around English experience, metal detecting, touring, pub experience, seeing London, castles, manor homes, and etc., I highly recommend Jimmy's Discovery Tours.

I made contact with a local in Colchester (through www.ukdetectornet.co.uk/) who has offered to get me on some land we can detect. Now I need to keep my fingers crossed and hope I get the time off and that the weather cooperates.
