Since I found the belt plate,I decided to do some research on the Militia.
This is what I came up with. Each county had there own militia, there were a total of 324 militia's through out California. The year's range from 1851 to 1880,some had no date's.So they could have gone into 1890's.San Francisco had the most out of all the county's,the year's ranged from 1856 to 1873. Stockton had 8 militia's between 1851 to 1871.Here is a little history on the first one.
They were named the San Joaquin Gaurd, they were mustered on Aug 5,1851 and mustered out on July 28,1852.The commanding officer's were Captain Richard Hammond and 1st Lieutenant James Lynch. Hammond was a West Point graduate and a Captain in the United States Army during the Mexican War. The organization came to an abrupt end only a few month's later.Due to Captain Hammond's resignation. He was extremely proud of his company and was disappointed at their lack of response to the Governor's call for volunteer's to quell the Indian's who were murdering settler's in Arizona. When he asked for volunteer's,only 6 men stepped forward.Hope you enjoy this little bit of history.HH,Tom
