They are draining a local lake in Fullerton. (North Orange county) I saw in yesterday's newspaper they captured a 100#, four foot long snapping turtle. They said it was at least 50 years old. There was a pic of it in the back of a pickup truck, it was the size of the tailgate.
They also said it will be shipped back east to a new home. What is wrong with where it lived for the last half century. Plenty of food there, ducks, geese and old koots.
This lake is the very first place I took my XLT.
The lake is down 75% and I want to get out in an area that I am sure was a swimming beach in the distant past but there is a very tall chain link fence all the way around the lake.

Don't think this a swimming lake any more. How do you think the darned turtle reached 100#. I wonder if he's got any jewelry in his belly? LOL.
I say leave him where he's been for the last 50 years. Changing schools can be a hard lesson for a turtle.

I have lived near that lake almost 12 years and it was never for swimming as long as I was there. The concretet pad looks like it was poured in the 30s or 40s the building is long gone.
I am sure that turtle is already in it's new home. The newspaper story was written like everything is over and done with.

Dan, that turtle is still in So Cal. they haven't shipped it off to the south yet. Did you ever get over to work that lake area when they drained it for cleaning? HH Vern2sjc

No, there is a chain link fence all the way around the lake. When I take my daughter to sunday school today I may take a drive over to that lake and take a hike around it. May be just enough time for the round trip.
There is another lake a few miles away. They drained it about 25-30% last year to fix some sides that were caving in. No fences were put up, everybody lived with it, no problems. Guess different cities have different paranoid lawyers afraid of lawsuits. By the way, on this lake I got way out into what was an older edge of the lake (guess the lake was smaller in the past) got lots of clad at the old shore line. The lake is pretty acid. Most of the copper in the middle of the clad was eaten away. Looked kind of like an oreo cookie from the side. Also, lots of clad under and next to both bridges which were high and dry in that area.
