I finally got around to probing the backyard. Found a couple spots that look promising. I have started digging one pit and have found several bottles and broken plates and tons of cans. However, from the looks of the items in there I would say it is probably trash from the 1950's. My question is, should I keep digging deeper in that hole? I'm not sure how they used those trash pits - did they dig new ones each year?

Hey Brian - yeah, I bought a bottle probe. I figured it wouldn't hurt to keep it in my car along with my detector. Thanks for your offer, I might give you a buzz if I find an area that appears to have older items. Its a bit tougher than I thought digging those big holes

i've dug a few bottle holes. deepest i've ever gone was around 12ft. the best ones, were when i needed a sledge hammer to break away the concrete. another time me another guy used a car jack to lift up a concrete slab. make sure you wear gloves when yer in the hole. i've cut my fingers many times.
also look carefully for small items in the hole and dug out dirt. while digging a hole on river street, i found an 1872 dime while inside the bottle hole.
