Hi all - I found this bottle last month near Julian, next to the river where they have been doing work. It was sticking out of a pile of dirt. I don't collect bottles, so I was hoping someone could help identify it. It appears old as it has air bubbles in it. It is a plain bottle that reads "Model Extract Co." on the bottom. Joe - I hear you are a bottle expert - so now might be a good time to jump in

The bottle appears to be about the turn of the century. One way to help identify the age is the length of the seams on the side of the bottle. The shorter the seams the older the bottle. Seams that stop on the shoulder of the bottle going up are older that ones that the seam goes all the way up to the top. OT may be able to help ID it. Cool find. Dan3

Thanks Dan3 - I appreciate the info. I just checked the bottle and the seam does stop at the shoulder. I finally found something old - I've been waiting for my first silver, so maybe this will pacify me for a while

Hi Doug,
I checked the 3 bottle reference books that I have and no luck. The information that Dan3 gave you is correct. I was going to guess that the bottle was machine made and dated from 1900 - 1920's.

Thanks OT - for taking the time to look in your books. I found another bottle this morning that looks old. I'm not even looking for them - they just stick right out. Now if it was only that easy to find a gold coin

Good morning Doug,
Tell me about this new "old" bottle, is it embossed?

Hi OT: There is a picture of the new bottle under the subject "gold country finds" in the metal detecting category. The only writing on this one is: "HIRES trade mark registered".

Good morning Doug in San Jose, I have 3 bottle reference book's and it was only listed in the "Hugh Cleveland's" book, but I'm not even sure if it's an exact match, but we are not talking about hundreds of dollars in value too. Here's a copy of the page on "Hires." www.kinzlicoils.com/mdpix-uploads/Hires1.jpg [/img] OT

OT - Thanks again for the info. I don't collect bottles, so if you would like to have these two, let me know. I'll be more than happy to give them to you.

Hi Doug, Thank you for your kind offer, but I must decline. I have no more room for bottles and besides in a few years you will probably be collecting bottles and you will say to yourself, "Self" I should have kept those bottles that I found. ;D www.kinzlicoils.com/mdpix-uploads/MuseumRoom2.jpg [/img] OT

OT, Nice bottle display. I see you have a Hoods Sarsaparilla donw in the corner. I found one of those in late 70s crawling under some poison oak to repair a water leak at my parents house in the hills. The bottom was sticking out about 1 inch, asumed that all there was, gave a pull and waht do ya know?!?! It was whole. Nice Cathedrals and black glass wines. I've always wanted to hunt for bottles back east and find one of those 18th century onion shaped wine bottles. Thanks for the eye candy. Gary

Looks like you could fit in a few more bottles if you put your printer outside the window - We could loan you one of those blue tarps ;D Just kidding, you have a very nice display, thanks for sharing.

Thanks Doug, Dean/Tanya, and Gary,
I love collecting old stuff like the bottles. I guess when we get older we always want to collect things that are older then we are, why is that? I've included a few more "museum room" shot's of the bottles.
Well I was going to post some photo's but someone has stolen the Kinzli photo upload thingey.
Oh well,
OT
