Hello all; Florida here. What is a minus tide and what does it mean if a tide is "-.51 feet" or ".072 feet". I hear negative tides are a good thing but what is the range of extremes on a tide chart. For example is there a "-5 feet" or a "+10 feet"?

FishNChips- That number represents the level of the water below the mean water level at slack tide (between incomming and outgoing tide). The larger the negative number the further out the water will be. Works the oppisite with the higher high tides. Mean sea level is an imaginary line representing the average level of the water throughout the year in that area. Because of the way the water is pulled towards the moon different places on the earth have higher highs and lower lows. I think around here they go +/- 7' In Alaska there were +/-20' tides I believe Test next monday!!!

Joe I believe the "-" is in respect to the tide being below sea level. -04 is = to 4/10 feet below sea level etc. The reference to .075 is 75/100 above sea level hope this helps. HH Vern2sjc
