Greetings!
I have been working on a 75th anniversary celebration at our school. It will be held on Saturday, May 14.
When the original 1929 school building was demolished in 1980, the principal uncovered a time capsule under the cornerstone. I have talked with him personally and this has been verified.
He described it as , a copper box, approximately 15"x11"x3". He held onto it for 2 more years, or so, then retired. At that time he passed it to the new principal.
I spoke with her also. She said that she thinks the time capsule was opened about 1982, new items were added, and it was reburied. This is where the story gets really fuzzy.
Some former teachers know nothing about it. Three former teachers think it was buried by the flagpole. Someone said it was put in the old boiler room.
Today I dug around the flagpole a little. What I need is a lead on someone who has a metal detector that might locate such an item. The local rental company has metal detectors but tells me they won't work for this situation. Another parent suggested I contact a metal detecting club for possible help.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Do you happen to know how deep it it might be? Where is the school located?
Depending on the size and depth I would think someone could find it if it is there.

Sure would help if you'd mentioned where you live...
You could probably try a long probe instead of digging up the school yard. Even just around the flagpole, a probe would come in handy.

Our middle school is in Oakland.
I don't have any idea how deeply it would have been buried.
Another thought is to ask any old timers who show up at our anniversary event. Maybe one of them would have a more specific idea of where it might be on campus. It might narrow the search location.
Or we could check around the flagpole area before May 14 to rule that area out.

Bobcat, I work for a School District and might have a few more ideas. The probe idea from Tonka is a good one for around the flagpole.
If the box was put in the boiler room, maybe your Building Services Dept. might know about it, since they would be working in there occasionally.
I assume the custiodian has no clue?
You don't have much time left to ask old timers.
Does your school put out a newsletter that might have mentioned the past event?
Maybe someone in the Business Office has some insight, someone who might have been at one of the dedications. Just some thoughts. GaryC/SanBdno

There are several forumites from the East bay. One of them will be sure to chime in soon. You won't have a problem getting a volunteer. That's like asking a bowling addict "do you want go bowling?" ;D

B Cat, I have a few days a week to screw around. What is your time frame? If we do this I would like weekends with as few kids as possible. Is the school fenced and gated? What is the address? Dan

Hey BOBCAT.......... If your going to divulge the location of your school, I would advise you do it via Privet Message or e-mail......... Unfortunately there are some dishonest, underhanded, simpletons, out there that could possibly use the information for their personal gain. Good luck........ R~

Ralphenstein, that may be true of sites with random loss goodies, or "I lost a diamond ring in such & such sandbox", but a time-capsule is hardly of value on the open market to anyone. At best, perhaps a few coins of the period, but rest newspaper clippings, etc.... If someone would night-jump that one, they have to be a real desparate looser. Maybe a lurker, but those regular folks here are above that, I would think.

I work in Oakland, PM me if you need someone to loan you a detector or come over and swing one around for a couple of hours.

[quote author=TominSalinasCA Ralphenstein, that may be true of sites with random loss goodies, or "I lost a diamond ring in such & such sandbox", but a time-capsule is hardly of value What.............is this the tall skinny kid that lives in Salinas........? Tommy, for a guy with your reputation of secrecy, your kinda loose with Bobcats capsule aren't ya.......? If you find a wheat-back, you protect the site like it held the Holly Grail......... We've night-jumped fences for the promise of far less.........think about it.......... Some things you just shouldn't try to put a dollar value on.......... I would think a 76 year old Time Capsule would be a grand prise......... I didn't imply it might be one of our "regular folks" that would do such a dastardly deed, but then I didn't rule anyone out either, did I.........? R~

I sent the guy a PM yesterday with my cell and didn't get a response so I am thinking he found it or he went elsewhere.
