Had business in Watsonville yesterday, and.... with 1 hr. burning a hole through my pocket, wouldn't ya know it, I found a demolition site. Woohoo 7 or 8 Victorian homes had been torn down. The site had not been scraped though, as it sat for several months, so we only got junk and clad there before (a seedy older neighborhood). Cleansweep, this is where you and I tried several months ago. Well this time I went by, I see that they scraped some parts down in prep. for whatever's going in there. Got 20 coins of which 4 where wheats ('20s to 50s), 14 clad, and these 2 tokens: The front says: "Oakland Brooklyn & Fruitvale RR Company" It's the size of a dime. The back says: "One Fair... 1871" and has a depiction of a horse-drawn trolley Here's a little web-piece about the history, d/t it's apparently the fore-runner of a modern east-bay transit system: www.actransit.org/aboutac/streetcar.wuThat history clearly says the RR started in 1873, so I don't know what to make of the 1871 date on mine. It does say that there was an earlier RR there (1870) called the "Market St. Railroad", so there musta been a cross-over in name usage I suppose. Anyone know what this piece would be worth? Next token I found: 1st edition Kappens guide has that one at $4.00. So that might be a $7 or $10 token now. It's the size of a nickel.

WTG on the tokens. They always make up for the lack of silver.

Cool token's Tom.I also have one of the token's from the Oakland,Brooklyn& Fruitvale and mine is also dated 1871.I have seen what you have posted on it,but I had found another site that I can't find anymore. It was one of the president's of the line and from what was written about it,it was started in at least 1867.Then in 1868 they extended the line, but that is as much info I could gather. It never said anything about it being any other line at that time. Your's is in alot better shape then mine, the GGP soil was not so nice to mine.HH,Tom

John, No, I've never found a Monterey/PG trolley token. They did have system there, but may not necessarily have had tokens for it. Maybe there was, and I've never found one. I dunno. Watsonville is a tad older than the rest of the central coast towns (barring the pueblo & mission cities). It dates to the mid 1860s (not counting the ranchos there even earlier, but those were spread around, and not really a "town"). Other central coast towns were started more into the 1870s usually. Tom, thanx for the info. Jeff found one link, an archived one so it's an old link no longer on google I guess, that was from an auction site. Someone had apparently hocked their token, the exact same one, for only $13-ish But you know how auctions are, that could merely have meant that at that time, only 1 seeker was watching that auction. All it takes is 2 or more guys to want the same thing, and it goes up.
