Hey All, Found an old park could be as old as 1918 more likely from '60s. The problem is that I get too many signals and they overlap have pulled out countless pull tabs and scrap steel. I am using an mxt and get iron and good signals overlapping, I being new am guessing that the good signals are adjacent or under the iron alot of hot rocks also. I've tried different disc settings and less gain with the same results. This park is in the Sacramento area and looks like it hasnt been searched at least not in a long time really weed grown. Anyone in the Sac area with an mxt that is willing to give me some lessons I will show them the site. I have tried to use the pull tab notch out but still am digging pull tabs.
Otherwise love my mxt and am having fun in the local parks all clad but still fun.

Hi Jim, I also have an xmt and like it a lot. When you hunt in a trashy situation like that, you will dig up a lot of pull tabs and other junk. A smaller coil should help you in isolating the real targets from the junk, but don't expect miracles.

Try slowing down. I mean real slow and try to seperate the targets. I like a smaller coil in trash but have been very successful just slowing down. If you ever want to expierience trashy these guys have a park in stockton that will make your ears bleed. Happy hunting and goodluck.

Hi. I just joined this forum and your post is the first that I will reply to. Luck you the first of thousands! I myself a newbie hunter, just like you, enjoying the great californian outdoors! And like yourself I'm just hunting parks and schools. And I also seem to be adding more links to my "pull-tab" chain then adding into my "goodies" bag. Rusty bottle caps? My Minelab loves em! Also bent pull-tabs, old old rusty iron, ect ect ect. But it really doesn't matter. My cousin lives there in Roseville in a home built in the 30's. I dragged my Bounty Hunter ssII over there just knowing I was going to dig up the best find yet since I started this wonderful hobby last Febuary. All I found was a 1966 penny, and a few old sprinkler heads. I will return when I improve my skills. Then I bought the Advantage by Minelab a couple of weeks ago,(a local dealer beat "kellco!") and headed to Carmichael Park to learn how to use it. After some trash recoveries I dug up my first coin with the new machine and lo....a 1952 silver dime! At about seven inches deep. Now I know what they mean by "a whisper" And when you find your fist deep one, you'll never forget that sound. Hers the best advice any seasoned detectorist will tell you, no matter what brand or model you have. Set the discrimination low, and join a metal detecting club.

I get the same problem with my mxt. i will be looking for nickles and gold, and i will just dig ptabs. What i have learned from expierience though is that nickles ring 18-22 mainly on the VDI, so i usually dig those that stay in that range, otherwise unless its a really strong target, and its not on the surface i usually wouldnt tend to dig those.
