My detector should arrive in a couple of weeks and I've never actually used one before. I spent the last couple of weeks reading on the web about metal detecting. There are many reasons I want to try this hobby: like digging in mother earth, like walking, and collect coins. I decided on a Minelab Explorer due to living very close to the Monterey Bay - lots of coast to search. I found a used one on eBay. I will keep a pictorial journal of my finds. I am a geek.

Hello BitRAKE, and welcome to the forum. You have chosen a great detector. I am sure there are many people around who live close to you who can help you get started. Good luck, and I look forward to seeing your posts in the future, JimClick

bitRAKE, good call on the machine, it's also my machine of choice, and also TominSalinas. Either Tom or I would be willing to help you learn it, we're both in the area (speaking for Tom, but I'm sure he'd be willing, he's a helpful type). ;D
Enjoy, and welcome!

Thanks for the kind words, Jim.
All help would be greatly appreciated, Jeff.
I'm free on weekends if anyone would like to get together.
I've been researching the geology of the area and talking to all the elderly that live in the area to find good land spots to search. Really can't wait to get started!

Thanks Bill - afraid of what? A geek is a social anomaly. I'd rather take the TV appart then watch it. I'm not a follower or a leader. I program in x86 assembly language for fun. I read text books sometimes and they keep me awake (whereas others are put to sleep by them). Maybe, you get the idea?
