Howdy all, My name is Barney, wife's name is Linda. Done alot in my 50 yrs. Hunting & fishing to Building street rods, to racing circle track on sat. nights to quading, back to Harley's..& 5th wheels..long way till retire or dead I hope. Just ordered ( last week ) a whites IDX to try & get the wife interested. We love looking for antiques & what not. Want to get back into gold panning..But first things first. Going to a Harley run in Laughlin NV. next mo. & would like to get familiar with the dectector before hand. Proud.. but not to so...to get good advice & how to get a good start, in detecting. From what I read here, sounds like a fun group with a bunch a know how..Hope to get started next week... Good hunting................... Barney

Hi Barney & welcome to the forum. You've started a great adventure with many pleasures.
You've got a good detector to break the ice with, just remember the locations you choose to hunt are the biggest factor in what you find.
Best of luck to you & have fun........j im

Welcome Barney and thanks for joining. Happy to hear you are going to squeeze a little detecting time in between all the other activities. Now you can dig your own antiques! ;D Dan3

Thanks for the welcome Jim & Dan. yep I will start in the backyard to try & get a feel between nails & coins. Then accross the street is a park with lots a lawn & play area, the wife will probably be the detector swinger, & of course I will be the digger..haha. We know a few old barn sites, so yep down the road perhaps we can dig up some cool antiques. Looking forward to it & happy to have a place to ask HELP- for when I get in the idiot mode.. Barney

Hey Barney, Welcome to the Forum. Even though I guess I don't belong (cause I'm from Florida) , I have found the folks to be really nice and knowledgeable. Ask questions; great info and tips will be forthcoming. HH, Joe

Welcome Barney, we have some similar tastes and interests - metal detecting and street rods Anyhow, getting used to the detector and how it works before going to a "spot" will help you a lot. With the Whites Classics, try to keep the discriminator as low as possible to keep the depth ability of the machine up. If you're hunting parks, take a medium sized nail with you (rusty is good), and adjust the discriminator control so that when you sweep over the nail, you get no beep. Then, from there, just creep it up just a touch (maybe one notch) and you'll be in good shape. The reason you do this is because often small gold rings are very low on the discriminate scale, around "Foil", and if you have the discriminator knob dialed up around Nickel or higher, you'll miss those small gold rings. Start out by digging everything (try a sandbox, easier digging) and see what things sound like, etc. and you'll catch on quick. Have fun out there at Laughlin!
