OK,
So today I had a chance to check around a 100+ year old hotel. Found only 5 pennies, oldest was 1964. Nothin deeper than 2" or so. So I began to wonder about the machine, and buried one of the pennies at about 6". Could not find it with the detector.
That bothers me greatly, since I feel now that I am wasting my time with this machine. Sure I may find some neat stuff with it, but how much am I missing?
Ready for a real Tector. Any thoughts?

I'm not sure what machine you have, but in most soils, 5" should be a loud signal. Things that will affect that are trash and ground material. Some ground is so bad that you can't hear a coin on the surface. Your targets may have been masked by iron so you wouldn't hear them as well.
A top of the line machine may or may not have worked any better, it's really hard to say...
