Kanila, hey I'm a new member, but I have an answer for you. The "NUT" folks are referring to, is a metaphor for treasure hunters and comparing them to a squirrel. In the spring and summer squirrles will bury nuts for the tough winter months, and not having the best memory, can't always remember where to dig for thier hidden goody. So when a metal detectorist find a coin or artifact, metaphorically he refers to it as a "NUT". Hope that helped. mercuryman

Now thats a good answer!! I have also seen that mentioned, mostly east coast water hunters use it. I knew somebody would come through. GaryC/SanBdno.

This question has been hanging around like a bad penny, so I guess I'll add my two cents. So, for whats its worth..........
As a younger man, I was known to turn a card or two.
In card games that have "community" cards. i.e. Texas Holdem, "the best possible hand", using the two hole cards, and the five community cards, is known as, "The Nut".
Could the term "Nut" have migrated from the card table to the stomping grounds of the detectorist?
Those Rednecks back East, love there card games ya know.
Well, that's my take on The Nut matter, its no more, or less plausible than the bushy tailed varmint mentioned earlier...........

A "nut" is a goofy person, most parks in Calif. contain many "nuts". Every detectorist that works parks has encountered more than a few "nuts".
