Hello all, how do you probe a coin properly? What do you feel? Also, what is the best pinpointer, how does it work- I am talking about the handheld pinpointers. I refuse to dig clad out of the grass b/c I can't ever find what I'm trying to dig. All info appreciated. HH, Joe

if your digging old coins i`ve heard said you should always us a fiberglass or carbon fiber type probe, i think they sell them but the ones ive seen were homade jobbers made from high quality chopsticks ,or the end of a fishing pole, with things like a golf ball with a hole drilled into halfway then epoxieing the glass rod into it, me i use a long screwdriver, and have grown accustom to the feel of a coin or foil, you can accually feel it in the handle if your at all touching the object. i`m shure the same applies to the fiber type too, probing takes a little patience, it takes me 5 to ten stabs to find it sometimes one,i love those ones!!, i wont usually hunt ground that is rock hard though. those electric hand held probes may be what you need, there is certainly enough people using them, they can`t be wrong! #nosmileys#nosmileys

about probing, if it`s a shallow target i just put the probe under the target and pop it out, or if i`m having troube or its deep, i cut a round plug, maybe 3 inches or so in diameter,as you shove your digger in the ground, rock it to and fro to help loosen the plug , my detectors laying next to me, so gripping the grass , i wave the plug over the coil for signal, no signal, set it aside and check the hole, probing around,i try not to pull any more than the plug ,so if it`s off to the side of the plug ,i tunnel over to it, coins usually lay flat under the roots, rings usually get entwined in them ,but it`s not written in stone, and it depends on how long the targets been there, but i would say 80% of the time the targets in the plug, i check it out over the hole so that the dirt drops into it as i`m looking for the target. thats all i can think of, guess it might help to get an electric pinpointer but i`m really to cheap to spend the money, hey!! maybe i`ll find one metal detecting!!....zman

Like Tom, I also use a vibra probe. Plugger recommended it to me and it works great. Before I bought the vibra probe I would feel funny about digging in the grass. In my opinion it is an absolute must if you are going to dig on turf. It doesn't make any noise and locates most targets that are close to the surface. If I have to dig deep I frequently stick in in the hole and it saves digging time bu locating the target for you.

Ditto everyone else's comments. They're about $100, and well worth it.
The vibration is nice and quiet. Actually, quite outstanding, since you don't have to take off your headset.
And, it's rugged.
No pinpointer was designed as a digger or a popper, but I have seen the Kellyco "free" pinpointers, the White's, and the ones advertised on eBay, and candidly, they don't hold a light to the VibraProbe.
Buy once. Buy right!

Those Vibraprobes are great, however, consider the Tinytec Ultra Deluxe too. It has a metal tip which I have used to pop out coins in soft earth. It has vibration, audio mode, battery saver feature and an LED light for shining into holes. I really like my Tinytec. Too bad I need to sell it since I dont like storing stuff in the closet. I just got an X1. The Explorer has a big pinpoint footprint and I need a wee bit more range on the probe for hunting. I have been off as much as 6 inches from the edge of a hole . JT

I have yet hit a coin with my probe. Drives me nuts. Getting good at the plug thingy. Found my classification screen helps over my drop cloth. Keeps the hands cleaner since most of my 'school yard' MD is done at night (Helps to live across the street) when the sprinklers are on.

Got to agree about the Vibra Probe. It is a great tool. I've used one for over two years and coins just keep getting easier to find. Sometimes you can put the probe into the hole and get just a quick vibration in one spot against the wall of the hole. You might think it is your imagination, but, iwhen you dig out that small section and find your target .... What a Kick in The Pants!!!
