i had that problem early on, what i did to solve it was to "de-tune" the detector over the target. i hit the all metal switch or button when the coil over the target area and one of two things happen, if i happen to hit the button righ on top of the target it tunes it out completely, but if i hit it to one side of the target it will bring the target in to a smaller area so that it`s easier to locate. the idea IS to be able to hit the switch when your approching the target, you have to experiment with this a bit but you`ll get the hang of it zman

Ever get a signal and then try to dig but the hole gets bigger and bigger w/o ever finding the target? Any info appreciated. Thanks, Joe Yuppers! Happens once in a while. I think a lot depends on the detector; I've only used Minelabs so far, so that'll affect my feelings on it. One: it's sensitive enough to pick up very small bits of foil (less than 1/8" square); if I hit it with my digger, it either folds up too small to detect or something like that. Another: sometimes I'll get a hit that's between two pieces of iron; null on both sides of the "target" tells me it's iron... but I dig anyway. Most often, though, it's because I've moved the target while digging. I hit a dime the other night, just after sunset, that was corroded enough to look just like dirt... couldn't see it, and when I gave the coil a swing over the area, the target moved. As it was in a high trash area, the signals got confusing, but I did finally find it, in a pile of dirt I'd moved. Good luck, and HH Erik

The only time that has happened to me, when the detector said it was still there, it was a big something. Like a stupid pipe.... That's the only thing I've had that went deeper and wider than any other time.

Being new to this activity, I have my share of growing holes . What drives me nuts is a big hole, hands caked in dirt and now there is no "hit" tone in the large pile, attached plug or hole. Is that what is called a 'hot rock'?
