David I found that I go and adjust the THRESHOLD down till the tone quiets down, is bearable. Also makes it easier to hear some hits without that constant humm.

Hi David, as suggested you can turn down the threshold volume on the detector or if you wish you can turn it down till it just barely goes silent if you like.
Get in lot's of practice & you'll gain confidence in self & machine. Good luck & HH.......................j im

The threshold is another tool,, when you get used to it,, you expect to hear it,, you don't want it to high or you will miss the whispers as they call them,, I call them faint signals.. anyways,, you do want to hear it a little,, when you are MDing and you pass over metal,, the machine will either accept it and give you a signal or reject it as trash,, if it does either the low hum will dissapear for a few seconds.. if you hear this you might want to take a few seconds yourself and figure what it is. swing a different direction, or change the speed of your swing,, you might be passing over good targets,, so the threshold is a friend when you know how to use it.. infact sometimes you might not hear an audible but check your monitor to see if you get a reading.
HH, and good luck, Boots
