Hi, All, I just found this forum. Glad to be aboard. I live in the Kern River Valley, about 50 miles east of Bakersfield. I use a White's MXT and have been detecting about 9 months. I've found some mini railroad spikes from mine train tracks, lots of tent stakes since this is a recreation area, old horseshoe nails, less than a dollar in change, and other misc. objects, some worth keeping and some that went immediately into the trash can. My 14-year-old grandson sometimes hunts with me. I like to hunt old Kernville, an old mining town nearby. Can't wait to go on longer trips to other Calif. and Nevada areas. I'm looking forward to hearing from other members and learning techniques from you. TTFN

Hi Lynne, Welcome to the forum. You'll like it here. By the way, you got yourself a great machine there. I love my mxt. Reaches down deep and has a pretty short learning curve.

Good for you Lynne BUT don't worry about the kind of questions you ask. I am senior citizen and have been for several years and just started MDing. I asked and got several offers to help which I accepted and am learning. HH Howard

Welcome Lynne. I lived just over the hill to the East in Ridgecrest for many years. There are some great spots out in the east Kern area and Kennedy Meadows is a favorite spot of mine for detecting. I now live in San Luis Obispo and work the parks/beachs and just can't get enough MDing in. Once again, welcome.

Hi Lynn.
You live in a pretty neat area. Right in the middle of a lot of history. I live up in the Bay Area and my interests are more into prospecting than coin shooting. Not many mines over this way.... Lack of planning I guess.
You mentioned mines in your area. What kind of mining? You machine is most flexible... Can look for about everything.
And, how many grandkids, and how old? Have they been infected with the "bug" yet?
Keep swinging that coil..

Since you ask, Rathbone, The grandson who is interested in MD is 14 years old. His older brother is a whitewater rafting guide (age 18) on the Kern River, his younger brother is into sports. The Kern River Valley is a tourist area about 40 miles east of Bakersfield. The mines that are/were here are gold mines. When people got tired of mining in the north or the veins ran out, they came down here and found more gold. My husband says there are quite a few mines up on Greenhorn Mountain. We found a few in the Piutes last weekend, but they all had LARGE warning signs to keep out. I'm waiting for a friend to show me where he found gold near the river. Nothing big, but color just the same. Thanks for writing.

Hi again, Lynne
I still am intrigued by the area that you live in.
How would you and your hubby (if he has the interest) like to swing a coil one weekend with this poster? Grandkids included of course. (Yours, not mine.)
I have had an interest in the area, but never knew anyone who lived nearby.
I hope this will work out..
Drop me a line, if you are so inclined.
Thanks.
