Hi, All, my friend wants to get a metal detector for her son who is ten and a couch potato. She can't afford more than $75 - $100. I mentioned the WalMart and Radio Shack models to her. She is going to look around and compare. Any advice from you guys? He lives near the Palmdale area and they do find metal parts (from the old mining activities) on their walks. Thanks.

I could be wrong.......but I believe that the walmart and radio shack detectors are both made by Bounty Hunter..... Good prices on low end detectors can be found on E-bay

garrett has new lower end models that have tons of features and starts at $ 179.00 at www.dixie-metal-detector.combounty hunter tracker IV can be had for $ 127.00 plus pouch and headphones shipped at www.luckydan.com. I had one and it works great. has about 3 to 4 inches of depth on the stock coil (maybe more in favorable conditions) and a little discrimination. I dont think it get cheaper than that unless you can get one second hand. rgds, bing

Thanks for the help. I passed your information on to my friend and I suspect one young man will have a very nice gift under his Christmas tree this year.
