I just bought an MXT and have been taking it to the beach and was wondering about the pros and cons between the dry sand or the wet at low tide?

Hey srdougm,
I've had mixed results with my MXT at the beach here in So. Cal. It typically works great in the dry sand, but I experienced a lot of overloading problems in the wet sand, even with the gain way down. I've tried a lot of the techniques suggested for overcoming this, i.e. grounding and locking, detecting parallel to the water's edge, etc., but often it just doesn't seem to help. On the other hand, I did have better stability when I switched to the 6x10 DD coil; this is definitely an improvement in my experience at the beach over the standard coil. I finally decided that I wanted something fully waterproof and made for wet environments, so I ended up adding a Detectorpro Wader to my arsenal. I'm very happy with both machines, but the Wader has the advantage in wet sand and water.
HH,
Dan

Welcome Srdougm to the forum. Dan gave you some good advice on the MXT. I see your in Orange Cty. where about? I live in San Juan and hunt the beaches alot. They have been hit pretty hard and not alot of finds out there. I hope for some good storms to come in an erode the sand to reveal some stuff that's been buried awhile. Let me know if you want to get together to hunt. I also belong to the Westcoaster's MD club in Garden Grove. If your interested we meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. HH Vern2sjc

i appreciate the info. It shortens my learning curve and makes it a lot more fun. Next question. Can you use a coil other than one made by the detector mfg?

Yes, you can use aftermarket coils, but they must be designed for your machine. www.jimmysierra.com is a good place to start. He is a Whites dealer/distributor and understands these machines. Look for his big foot (and I am not talking about his shoe size) Dan
