Hey all, Ok. I know that for beach hunting I need a scoop. But what about parks? Some articles I've read say a long skinny screw driver will do the trick, others say to get a "digging tool". Any comments on what the ol' timers like best and why? Thanks, Dan

If you're going to be digging in the grass, I highly recommend an electronic pinpointer. Harbor Freight sells a little handheld detector called the Little Wizard for $15 that works OK. It's works pretty good for the money and it's a lot cheaper than a White's Bullseye. A pinpointer will save tons of time and help you avoid digging huge holes.
For digging, I think the tool to which all others are compared is the Lesche Digger. It's a little pricey at $30-$40, but I hear it's indestructible. I bought a $25 Jimmy Sierra digger that's similar and works OK, but in retrospect, it probably would have been better to go for the Lesche. It's probably more a matter of preference, though. Just don't use a cheap gardening trowel, it will break the first day!
As far as using a screwdriver, I've heard lots of people say you can pop coins right out of the ground without digging, but I've never gotten it to work well. The few times it works I end up scratching up the coins really bad. And I don't know what you're supposed to do with targets that aren't coins, like pulltabs, foil, rings, etc. It makes more sense to me to just go straight for the plug.
Sorry for the length, but I hope this helps.

Hey SuperChicken, A screwdriver for targets in lawns that are not more than 2" deep works pretty well, once you learn the technique. Either an electronic pin pointer or a mechanical probe will let you fix the target and then you can pop it. Diggers work well too and can be used for deeper targets as well. ABOVE ALL ELSELearn the proper technique to dig in a lawn area and fill your holes so the fact you where there is unnoticeable. Everybody needs to learn this so as to protect our hobby. (If you already knew this, sorry. But the fact that you were asking about digging tools,...).

Hey SuperChicken, If we hook up to do some hunting this Monday I can show you some of the stuff I have to dig with. I saw in the paper today that this weekend at Big Corona Del Mar they are celebrating 100 yrs of the city alot of happenings going on at the beach, fireworks and such, might be the place to hit on Monday AM. If that sounds good let me know and I'll give you directions. Vern

Thanks for info guys. I will definetly take a look at the Lesche Digger. Vern, Monday at 6am sounds good. If anyone else is interested in meeting us there: To get there take PCH past MacAurther Blv go down to Marguerite and turn right follow it down and it turns right again at the end go down a ways till you see a drive on the left side that goes down the hill. PARK UP IN THE RESIDENCIAL AREA AND WALK DOWN. I'll be the newbie looking guy with the goat tee, swinging away with no clue as to what I'm doing. Dan aka - SC
