Hi Eric,
Go to the Los Banos park museum and see the curator, they are very friendly and have lots of information about your area, towns that no longer exist, levy crossing, old farm school houses, and etc. Tell them that you are a resident of Los Banos and that you have joined our Club. You might want to offer some of the artifacts that you recover from the sites that they suggest.
Good luck,
;)T

I've heard a few people suggest that you search for your county/town on eBay. Hopefully you'll find old postcards and such with old locations on them. I've never had much luck with this method though, but maybe it'll work better for you. Good luck!

See if you can find Sanborn Fire Insurance maps form your local towns. They are great. They are very accurate maps of all the businesses and buildings. Every town had to have them so the insurance companies could sell their policies. They were usually dwawn every year or so. If you can find different years of the same town you can compare them and see how the town grew.
I have several from my local towns, some date back to 1890.
They are hard to find unless you live near a large library or university.

Sorry to take so long to reply Eric. I would suggest that you get a book called The Treasure Hunters Manual by Karl Von Mueller,7th ed.,LCC:66-13565 it'll be a good read and it'll open up ideas on where and how to search for LEADS. Also get the book Successful Coin Hunting, Garrett, C. ISBN:0-915920-30-1, this is the old one not the new updated(read Advertisement) one. And last but not least is Treasure Recovery from SAND and SEA, Garrett, C., ISBN: 0-915920-51-4. Eric, If you can get the oldest ones of these and for that matter most Publications. The reason is that in the 50's-80's most of the people who wrote stuff were trying to educate and inform. Now it seems that most Books are Written to SELL something when it comes to our Hobbies. In these books you will have to read and reread them to learn what is being written. There is reference to other books also that should be AQUIRED and read and correlatted with previous knowledge to open up new ideas and views on the subject. And last but not least here is a website you may not know about that is for SURF hunters. www.alanhassell.org.uk/Sincerely Bill Adams Have a Nice Day and God Bless!
