My not in use any more DFX has depth meter. And I have heard it's very good on low conductors = gold. Not sure how the depth indicator would work on small gold nuggets, since most general purpose machines estimate the depth assuming it's a coin sized item. Smaller or bigger items than that can throw of the depth reading rather heavily. For example the small 3 ring mini balls we dug at the belmont site showed 5-6 inches deep on the depth indicator on my explorer. However, they actually were only 1-2 inches deep. Check the yellow pages for metal detectors in your area. And like I said, the DFX is a good one. All manufacturers more or less have machinces specifically for prospecting. Take your time befor emaking a decision. I did not do my homework and ended up spending over $2,500 for 2 metal detectors which are great no doubt. But if I'd done some more research I would have ended up buying 2 machines for $2,200 and they would have been better. Well, I did by them anyway, but it was a bad hit financially. But what can you do, if you;re addicted. LOL. Good luck and HH. Martin

Hi Mike and Welcome to the forum, I am curious as to whether you are interested in Gold and Silver Coins, Gold and Silver Jewerly, or just the raw Metals, Gold and Silver. Many people here are experts in each area, so I am sure someone here can help you. Good luck in whatever you are searching for, JimClick

Thanks for the response Mike, There are a lot of silver coins to be found out there, but gold is a bit harder to come by. Many of us have been searching for many years without much luck. But once in a while, there is someone who gets lucky. I think there were 4 gold coins posted last year on the forum. So they can be found. Most of the detectors that we use here on the forum will be able to find these coins and indicate their depth. Whatever detector you may decide on, it is helpful to get a sample of various coins and test how the detector responds to them. I wish you very good luck, and am looking hard for my first gold coin. I look forward to hearing about your finds. JimClick ps. I would think the Explorer (which is what I use) and the DFX are the top detectors around here. Of course, other companies also make great detectors.
