I just got a Excalibur 1k and was wondering if anyone had any helpfull tips and ideas on how I can learn the tones quicker. Also if anyone can tell me how to figure out the depth of a target just by tone. I realize alot of this may only come with experience, but would still like some helpfull hints. <--I love that...LOL

Let me welcome you to the forum Ocdep. One way to learn the tone's is to do some air test with some of the stuff you want to find.
Depth by tone,if you are getting a real loud tone the target is shallow. Most likely 0 to 5 inch's.A weak tone but repeatable is 6 inch's and beyond.HH,Tom

Sounds cliche but a test garden is the best way to learn the tones. also digging every repeatable signal will help you learn. If i haven't gotten a signal for a long time and then i hit a pulltab, i may think it is a coin because i gorget what a coin sounds like! practice practice practice. Tom was right about the tones, it is the VOLUME of the tone (in disc) that tells you how deep it is.
coin on surface= loud high tone coin 4 inches down= semi loud high tone coin 6 inches down= semi soft high tone
deep coins may have only a slight effect on the threshold, i pulled out a deepie that sounded like iron with a tiny peep of a high tone, it was mostly a null. Iron sometimes gives you the same effect if it is pointy, the magnetic field condenses at the tip of the nail/wire and you read it as a coin... The quickest way to learn the tones is to DIG EVERYTHING, not only will you find more trash, but you will find more treasure! good luck!

bury several coins at different depths in your back yard and make a note of how deep and what type of coin it is...this is called a garden put several of the same coins of each type with a piece of junk next to it..ie a nail for one, a bottle cap, a pull tab. This will simulate the conditions of a normal park! This is the best way to train with a new detector with know targets!
