When scanning items set resolution to 96 dpi or as close as your scanner will let you select, if you scan at 300 or 600 dpi. pictrues will be will be very large on a computer as the screen is 96 pixals per inch. If you want to print then you can use a higher resolution. This will make the file size much smaller and save as .jpg file. The same goes for cameras select 480x640 or 600x800 if you can.
