When asking for permission who do I ask, the principal? What is the best approach to take to increase my chances for obtaining permission? Are school officials generally open to allowing us to detect on school property?

If you go on a weekend or Holiday when school is out, rarely will you have any issue as long as you are being neat and not leaving holes and a mess.
personally, I have never asked a school for permission. I don't hunt school grounds that often, but the ones I have I just went on a weekend or after hours and no one has ever said diddley!!!
Good Luck

I normally go on weekends too but I did call the school district for the areas I want to hunt in. They've always said the same thing. Play area is fine but don't dig in the grassy areas. I heard that last part as: don't leave evidence that you've dug in the grassy areas...

I don't think that you will have much luck gaining permission at L A Unified School Dist. schools. All are fenced and posted with no trespassing signs, all schools are patroled by LA School Police.

Marc, School Districts are varied in their approach to who steps on their turf. Most of my finds this year came strictly from the sand or bark area play pits.
Like Ron (CA), TONKA, TominMant, say. The weekends are best if you can work that out. You will have very little trouble with anyone, unless the area is locked up tight.
Here in San Bernardino most of the schools have at least one steet side gate open to the grounds. In the summer I usually can get in about two hours hunting after school without any problems. If there is a daycare on campus after school is out, you may want to move on to another site because they will ask you to leave if the kids end up on the play equipment. Most teachers and aids are nice and if you just leave you have sent a message that you are a good guy. Just go back on the weekend or holidays.
I usually only hit elementary schools because I have a limited amount of time and those are the best producing for clad and believe it or not gold and silver rings. Hope this helps some. GaryC/SanBdno.
