Hi, I am brand new and today gave my son a metal detector for Christmas. Actually got him one last year but it was a "toy" and didn't work really. This one is pretty good. Secretly, I have always wanted to do this but have felt awkward metal detecting alone, so I plan to go out with him. So here is my question.
What are the laws we should be aware of in California? I know about filling holes and such. And I think that I have heard you can't go metal detecting in national parks. Is there anything else we should know before we go out? Are all the beaches fair game? Thanks, Mom of new metal detector

Hi Debbie & welcome to the forum. Your right on the National park's & monuments & the like. The best suggestion I can think of is your local Metal Detector shop. They would gladly talk to you a potential future costomer, another thing to consider is ask about the local club, then get involved & you'll get all the help, guidance, encouragment, & probably another lady that would like to take you hunting. Good luck, your in a great area with lot's of potiential. Enjoy your new hobby & keep us informed. I think we might have a forum member or two in your area. Happy Hunting(HH)..........j im

Hi Debbie, The East Bay Regonial Parks District require a permit to hunt the parks and beaches they control. Contact the park offices for more information. Cost is around $35.00 for a 5 year permit. This is assuming that you even live in the Bay Area. Email me for a list of general places to go detecting. Later,HH, Frank

Hi Debbie, Welcome to the Forum. Yes as Jim said there are others here that live in your area. You may want to try the Main forum to find out who's out there in your area. As far as hunting parks, read the rules upon entering it, if not listed then. I would go about it as it is OK to do. If you need a permit in your area, or your in a park that its not allowed, Trust Me, someone will tell you. Then a simple sorry, and be on your way is probably the best way to handle it. More then likely if you were to ask, the person wouldn't know, so it would probably just say no. I've never asked, and have only been Questioned once. But when the ranger looked to see if he could see the holes I dug, not finding any he said go right ahead keep going. The key is dig a clean plug, practice on your own Yard to perfect it. It's best to dig in areas where the ground is moist, one it's easyer to make a clean plug, two it gives a better chance for root system to get a hold back faster. Debbie get out there and start finding some targets, don't forget to share with us what Your finding. HH
