I remember when I started this hobby. What type of digger should I use?? I tried them all and most of them sucked!! ;D The simple trowel from Home depot, the buck knife, the Wilcox line (not bad for some areas), and many more. I finally bought the Lesche digger. Seemed like a lot of money for a digger $28 in 1997. $35 or so now. Best darned digger I have ever used. I spent twice that on the other crap I bought and discarded!! There are other good diggers out there like the 3-in-One is not bad, but I prefer the Lesche! Second tip. Go to Wal-mart or K-Mart or other type of store and go into the Auto section. Look for the cheap back-seat rubber floor mats. (Smaller square ones) They work great for retrieving your targets: all the dirt goes onto the mat and then you can dump it back into the hole with very little mess. Saves a lot of time and keeps the parks looking better. Plus they never get brittle or crack. I have had mine for over two years and people that hunt with me know that it is always with me when park hunting. Hope that helps someone! HH Ron (CA)

Ron's advice is good. The digger was also one of my first tools I got. The other being a coin probe. The probe can be used to find exactly where the item is in the ground. I recommed the one from Jimmy Sierra. This tool has saved me time. I do not recommed the coin popper though, seldom have I used it.

you can get them online. Ebay used to have quite a few listed.
Do a Google for Lesche

The hori thing may be a good sub for a 3 in 1 tool, but cant compare to a Lesch. If you are serious about detecting, spend $10 and get a Lesch.

My best tip for recovery is to use a cut out from a white trash bag as a mat.
I cut out 24x24 inch piece of trash bag to use as a mat. Lay it out next to your plug when digging.
The white background does wonders for locating a target. It folds easy into your treaure pouch and does not take much space. When filling your bag, just grab the two farthest corners and the material turns into a funnel filling your hole in 2 seconds flat.
Just stomp the dirt and replace the grass plug and your ready for your next target.
I am surprised taht I am still using the first one I made after 4 months.
JT
P.S. I have the Lesche and love it. I think though that it could be better if it had a removable long handle (32")and a foot peg to ease the digging of packed dirt. Anyone think if this is a good idea?

I just use a white dish towel, it is great to put your dirt on and easy to dump back in the hole. And it has a special use if you are way out there and mother nature calls you to become like a bear in the woods. HH,, Boots

Whew, lots of new members.........great. I went thru the "what can I use as a digger" stage too. Love my lesche. I looked at that hori knife. One problem. You should have a hand guard. One slip and you could have a major problem with a badly cut hand. That's what I love about the lesche, good hand guard, no slipping. Also it is indistructable. nothing is better. AG

The Lesche is the only one that I have not destroyed. It's "Mary proof". I've tried everything and this is the only thing that really works for me. Untill something better comes along......Just wish I had designed it!

i vote for the lesche too. aside from it being very effective, the odd shape keeps people from thinking Im walking around with a dagger JT
