Welcome to the forum. Hope I can answer some of your questions.

1. do i need a permit to metal detect anywhere or just certain places?

You can't detect in State and National Parks(I wouldn't even brother to ask !) Always look at the park regulation sign if it says no "metal detecting" or permit required do as it says.

2. where do i get a permit in santa clara county?
Can't help you !

3. is there a way to find out if a public place is MD friendly before i go?
If your worried about having problems with the public just stay away from large groups of people. Best times to go to parks are early in the morning. Most people are still sleeping or haven't figured out what there going to do for the day!

4. what are the safest places to MD in the East Bay?
If you know the place or park is dangerous take someone with you and beware of your surroundings at all times.

Last thing practice digging plugs in your own yard and then when you think you have that down pat, practice some more!I have seen and heard of park employees kicking out people with detectors who damage there lawns! Good Luck and have fun!

Welcome to forum.

1. East Bay regoinal parks require a permit but they limit how you can dig severely. I haven't had any issues with any of the parks in Oakland or Alameda as of yet. Mostly interested parties asking questions.

2. This is from the Santa Clara county site but each City may have it's own rules.

Sec. B14-55.2. Metal detecting.

Metal detectors may be used in turf and non-turf areas of all County parks, except in historical and cultural sites as defined in the Department's policies and procedures. An annual permit is required for metal detecting.

Phone: (408) 355-2200 (General Information Number: Monday thru Friday, 8am to 5pm, except Holidays)
Email: parkinfo@prk.sccgov.org (If you are sending mail to a specific employee please indicate their name in the subject header and the mail will be forwarded)
Fax: (408) 355-2290

4. Doesn't matter where you go there are always risks. Try to have someone with you or hit spots that are out in the open so you can see anyone coming. Timing is important too too late and the wrong crowd may be there. To early and you might be waking up some bums.

I night hunt more than day since parks are less crowded but that is because of work.

DD

I wouldn't ask for an Alameda parks pass since I don't know of one. Make sure you know how to dig before you attempt the parks.

I would keep a low profile though. I haven't been bothered by the man except for a few parks and I was just asked if they had seen someone.

East bay regional parks require a pass and can be purchased at the office. off 580 in oakland.

Mike aka another east coaster.

It's gets it's share of MDing. AlamedaGayle hits it and a few locals that are not on the board. Probably not the best time of year since it isn't quite warm enough out for lots of beach activity.

I plan on spending some time there on the coming months.

I haven't found much out there just a 5 or 6 dollars in clad and a some silver jewelry.

I prefer turf digging but the beach is fun.
